Muharram is the first month of Islamic new year also known as Hijri new year or Hijri calendar new year. Normally Muslim gulf countries observe a holiday on first day of Muharram as a start to Hijri new year while some Muslim countries observe holiday on 9th and 10th of Muharram. This month is one of the four sacred months Quran has told and unfortunate incident of martyrdom of Imam Husain (A.S.)grandson of Prophet of Islam "Muhammad" SAWAWS by Yazeed ibn e Muawiya happened this very month.
Yazeed ibn e Muawiya was a candidate for Muslim leadership (Khilafah).Infamous drunk yazeed ibne Muawiya was not deserving for the post by any means. To achieve his cause he asked for support from Imam Hussain A.S.The support and vote of prophet Muhammad SAWAWS grandson Imam Hussain A.S. and his family was a must for Yazeed ibn e Muawiya to attain strong and long-time. Imam refused to vote him for obvious reasons.

To achieve his objective Yazeed ibn e muawiya forced Imam Hussain (A.S.) and his family. kept them hungry and thirsty for three consecutive days along with women and infant children but Imam Hussain A.S. and his 72 companions proved steadfast like rocks on the path of truth. Defeated worstly by the determination of Imam Hussain A.S.and his family Yazeed ibn e muawaiya and his army killed Imam Hussain A.S. along with his almost 71 Companions including his sons, brothers and nephews on 10th of Muharram.
Muslims come out in his remembrance in big numbers throughout the world. Conferences and seminars are held to comemorate and salute Imam Hussain A.s. and his companions.
Some people mourn as a protest to the most brutal act in the human history. Some people fast too in first ten days of Muharram or 8th, 9th and 10th of Muharram to commemorate Imam Hussain A.S 's hunger and thirst in Karbala.
